Cooking as a Class

Yum, Yum!!!  My first graders earned a special incentive for good behavior.  We cooked as a class today and made spooky Frankenstein dirt cups.  Everyone got to help stir the slime (green vanilla pudding) and crush the dirt (oreos).  Each student used a sharpie marker to draw a Frankenstein face on their cup.  This delicious Halloween treat was a hit!  Way to go kiddos!  Keep up the good work!

Happy Halloween!!!!!

We have been practicing our BLACK CAT poem all week!  Enjoy this fun rhyming Halloween poem!

A BIG thank you to all of the parents that helped plan or sent snacks and drinks for our Halloween party this afternoon.  The kids had a wonderful time and brought home big bags full of goodies.  Let the "sugar high" begin.  I hope everyone has a great time trick-or-treating with their families this weekend.  Here are a few pictures from our fun afternoon.

King of ING!!!!

We are all royalty in first grade today!  This week we have been adding "ING" to action words.  The "King of ING" helped us learn that when you add ING to a base word it tells us that the action is on going.  Students made ING crowns today.

Red Ribbon Week!!!!

First Grade is TEAMing up against drugs!!!!  Each student wore their favorite team shirt today!

You have the "WRITE" to say NO to drugs!!!

Oh no.... Who Smashed My Pumpkin???

My students worked very hard drawing and coloring their jack-o-lanterns.  To their surprise, I asked them to crumple them up and rip them into pieces.  Oh boy.... some students were not happy.  We discussed how we might feel if someone smashed the real pumpkins that we worked so hard to carve. To go along with our activity, students got creative and brainstormed lots of ideas on how a pumpkin could be smashed.  Each student wrote about three things that happened to their poor pumpkin.  It was a fun little twist on this Halloween pumpkin activity.

Call the Doctor!!!!

These poor words were cut apart and mended back together with an apostrophe bandaid.  Don't worry, we have very experienced first grade doctors that were able to successfully create contractions!

Echolocation Rap

Check out this fun song we have been singing to help us learn how bats use echolocation.

Meet Eddie and Ed

Eddie and Ed are our friends from the past!  They help remind us that if "ed" comes at the end of a word it means that it already happened.  Students illustrated and colored these cute little characters this week and wrote past tense sentences with action verbs ending in "ed".

Busy As Bats!!!!!

We just started our BAT unit and my first graders are very excited!  We have been reading all sorts of books about these interesting mammals and have learned many facts this week.  If you visit our classroom, you will see these nocturnal animals roosting around our room.  Each student wrote a poem about bats and labeled a bat craft.  We also discussed the wingspan of the largest (Flying Fox) and smallest (Bumble Bee) bats in the world.  Students were amazed at the 6ft. wingspan of a Flying Fox bat.  Did you know that the Little Brown bat is the most common bat in North America and it can eat about 600 mosquitoes in just 1 hour????  Well, ask one of my first graders and they can tell you!

Our class will also be sponsoring an orphaned bat through the adopt-a-bat program at www.batworld.org  Students have been donating money to help raise the $30 we need in order to make this adoption possible.  The money will go towards food and supplies for an orphaned bat that can no longer survive in the wild.  We have raised a total of $49.18!!!!!  Way to go first grade!

Author's Purpose

Last week, students learned about author's purpose.  We discussed that when an author writes a story, they are either writing to persuade, entertain, or inform the reader.  We had lots of practice identifying author's purpose throughout the week and concluded the week with a couple writing activities.  Each student was encouraged to write an entertaining, informing, and persuading sentence about candy corn.  Of course, they had the most fun writing their entertaining sentences!  We also made a pencil craft with flip up flaps that described the different types of author's purpose and wrote an entertaining, informing, and persuading sentence about pencils.  I am so proud of all of their hard work and excellent listening ears!
