Stars and Stripes.....
In social studies, we are learning about our nation's flag. My first graders now know that the flag has 50 stars, 13 stripes, stands for freedom, and is red, white, and blue. Each student also made their very own flag using paint dobbers.
Who Knew Sequencing.....
Who knew sequencing would make someone so hungry. Today, students used key words FIRST, NEXT, THEN, and LAST to tell how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They did a great job writing about each step and we were all ready for lunch after this activity! LOL

Rhyme Time
This morning students used their iPads to scan QR codes in search of rhyming words. I always get excited when we can incorporate a little technology into a phonics lesson. Everyone had a good time and worked very well as a team!
Sequencing
Today we read If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. We discussed the main character and setting of the story and also sequenced the story as we retold the the adventures of Mr. Mouse. This week we have been practicing the skill of retelling a story using key words such as first, next, then, and last.

Daily 5
Daily 5 is in full swing in 1st grade and my students are loving it!!!!! It is so rewarding as a teacher to observe my students taking ownership of their learning! Each day, students read with me in a small reading group and then make a choice whether they would like to read to self, read with a buddy, work on words, work on writing, or listen to a book. There is a lot going on during our LA block but it works!!! We are very busy but most importantly we are learning and becoming better readers and writers. Here is a sneak peek at my first graders working hard during Daily 5!!!!!
Cade working on writing.
Caleb and Nathan buddy reading.
Deacon working on writing.
Hunter working on words.
Boston and Hailie buddy reading.
Hailey, Nevada, Makayla, and Holden listening to a book.
Lexi and Taylor working on words.
Parts of a Plant
We are moving right along this week in science and have been talking about the parts of a plant. My students learned a fun little song about the parts of a plant to the tune of Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. Each student made a flower craft and labeled the parts. We also set up an experiment so we could observe the "STEM" in action. We now know that the stem's job is to suck up the water and nutrients from the roots. It is like a straw! We observed that the dyed water traveled through up stem of the flower and changed the color of the petals. AMAZING!!!!!

Butterfly and Frog Life Cycles
In science last week, my students explored and learned about the life cycles of butterflies and frogs. Unlike mammals, we have learned that when a butterfly or frog hatches from an egg they don't look anything like an adult butterfly or frog. My first graders creatively made life cycle crafts/diagrams to show all that they have learned.

Flip Flop Math
In math we are learning that you can change the order of the numbers in an addition number sentence and the sum remains the same. This morning we flipped flopped our numbers and made 2 addition problems with the same answers. My students really caught on to the whole "FLIP FLOP" expression and we made a FLIP FLOP math quilt!
