Y = Long e

Check out our YUMMY and TASTY CANDY!!!!  This week in spelling and phonics we are learning that sometimes the Y can make the long e sound.  Students made yummy candy mints today and wrote their spelling words with Y.  I wrapped them up in clear plastic wrap and we displayed our delicious work in the hallway.

Animal Teams

This week we read a story titled ANIMAL TEAMS.  Students learned about how animals work together as a team to help each other in the wild.  After reading the story with a partner, students choose their favorite animal team and illustrated a picture.  They also wrote about how each animal helped the one other.

Happy President's Day

My first graders have been learning facts about two very important presidents this week.  As a class, we have been reading books about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and following up with class discussion.  Did you know that Lincoln kept very important papers in his tall black hat so he wouldn't forget about them?  Well, my kiddos thought that was pretty interesting and wrote about what they would keep in their hats and why it is so important to them.

We also learned that George Washington's face is on the one dollar bill and the quarter.  Abraham Lincoln's face is on the penny and the five dollar bill.  Students finished the sentence IF I WERE PRESIDENT, I WOULD..........

JR4H and Valentine's Day

It was a very exciting Friday afternoon at Erie Elementary.  Students were busy jumping rope to raise money for Jump Rope Four Heart and afterwards celebrated Valentine's Day in their classrooms.  Each student decorated their own Valentine sugar cookie, played love bingo, and passed out their valentine cards.  Here is a sneak peek at our day!

Here are a few Valentine activities we did as a class earlier this week.  Each student got to taste a Hersey's  kiss and a hug.  They had to decide which one they liked better and then we made a graph with our data.  Students also made a little Hershey's kiss craft and wrote about getting hugs and kisses from their family.  Students also came up with 5 reasons why they loved someone in their family and made them a special Valentine!  I have such loving and caring students.  All 20 of them were my little Valentine's this week.

Dental Health Month!

Februrary is dental health month!  We celebrated at Erie Elementary with a special assembly put on by Delta Dental.  The kids loved seeing Tooth Wizard and Mr. Plaque argue about what is good and bad for your teeth.  It was super cute.  Each student received and goodie bag from the Tooth Wizard.  They go a new toothbrush, dental floss, and a tube of toothpaste.

In the classroom we also talked about taking care of our pearly whites=)  Students sorted pictures of food into good and bad categories.  We discussed what we use our teeth and why they are important. We also did an experiment with eggs, water, and soda.  It was interesting to hear what my kiddos hypothesized about the egg in soaking in the water.  This was a great example of what soda can do to our teeth.

To end the week, students made a huge toothbrush with bristles that explain how to brush your teeth.  They used the key words first, next, then, and last to explain the steps.

KEEP BRUSHING KIDS!!!!

What will the soda pop do to the egg?

Spring Is Near!!!

Well, we made our predictions and hoped that Mr. Groundhog WOULD NOT see his shadow on February 2nd!!  We were right!  Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow!  Hopefully spring is on its way.  To celebrate the holiday we did a "HOW TO DRAW" a groundhog and discussed facts about this interesting mammal.
