What do you think Mrs. Holland will do this summer?

I look forward to this activity every year.  My students are so creative and come up with a great summer bucket list for me.  According to their illustrations and what they wrote, I am going to be one busy teacher this summer.  I will definitely be stopping by Whitey's a few times this summer  for ice cream but I am not so sure about swimming with alligators or wearing a bikini..... Bahahahahaha!  Enjoy!

School Picnic!

What a beautiful day for our school picnic lunch!  I enjoyed eating outside with my kiddos today!  Our lunch was super delicious as well.

Author Study: Mo Willems

This week we are reading books written by the author Mo Willems. He is famous for characters such PIGEON as well as PIGGIE and ELEPHANT. We started the week off by reading one of our favorites..... Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus. Students graphed whether they would or would not let the Pigeon drive the bus and then engaged in a writing activity stating their reasoning. Students also drew their very own Pigeon. We sure do have some talented artist in first grade this year.

On Tuesday, we focused on Mo Willem's PIGGIE and ELEPHANT books. My students made a craft of their favorite character, we compared and contrasted the two main characters using a Venn diagram, and we also retold the story using a "Somebody-Wanted-But-So" graphic organizer.

Today we read Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. Students worked with a partner to make popplets identifying the main character, setting, problem and solution. They used photographs taken in the elementary building as a setting/backdrop for an illustration of themselves with Knuffle Bunny. This was a fun writing activity that the kids enjoyed.

Building Sentences

My students have been busy building detailed sentences using adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs! Way to go first grade!!!!! Check out these creative sentences and illustrations.

Spring Field Trip

I think the kids had a great day at the QC Botanical Center. It might of been a little cloudy but at least there was no rain! Students enjoyed listening to the book titled Hey Little Ant next to the pond in the garden, learning about butterflies, and making their very own terrariums. Everyone was so well behaved and did a great job listening and learning. I would like to thank all of the parents and grandparents that joined us for the afternoon. Your help was greatly appreciated.
