Let's Build Words

One of our vocabulary words this week is INTERESTING.  Students worked in small groups and used the letters in the word interesting to brainstorm and build new words.  I was really impressed with their teamwork and all of the words that they came up with.

Counting Syllabels

These volunteers were troopers.  As a class, we clapped syllables and stuck picture cards onto Holden, Nathan, and Hailey as they held up the correct number of syllables in each word.

Earth Day with Hen and Friends

My first graders have been working hard all week practicing their lines for our reader's theater.  We performed Earth Day Hen and Friends by Carol Montgomery on Friday, April 22nd for teachers, staff, and students.  I am beyond proud of how well they all did.  Video will be posted soon!

Tasty Math Lesson

We are learning about 3D shapes in math and one of our lessons this week was really yummy.  Students got to eat a variety of food that is shaped like the 3D shapes we are learning about.  We ate Tootsie Rolls shaped like cylinders,  cheese balls shaped like spheres, caramels shaped like cubes, Rice Crispy Treats shaped like rectangular prisms, and Bugle chips shaped like cones.

"AW"esome Job!

This week my kiddos are learning about the "aw" and "au" sound.  Today they had an egg hunt in the classroom.  Inside each egg was an "aw" or "au" word that they had to unscramble.  It was a bit of a challenge but they worked together with their partners and figured it out. Way to go first grade!

Spelling Pattern: oi and oy

This week in spelling my kiddos learned about oi and oy. This is such a fun spelling pattern to teach. We made pig snouts so we could "OINK", planted spelling word flowers in the "SOIL", made "ROYAL" crowns, and had a special "TOY" show and tell.  Students also had their very first spelling test this week.  They are almost 2nd graders so we are practicing for next year.  It is hard to believe the school year is almost over.
OINK OINK OINK!!!!

Evan, Ashton, and Taylor show off their oy/oi flowers.

Check out Bradley and Nevada's royal crowns.

We all brought a special TOY to school on Friday!

Tongue Twisters

Today we learned about alliterations.  Our tongues were all tied up after this lesson.  We read Dr. Seuss ABC and came up with our very own alliterations.  My students wrote some creative silly sentences.  Check out our tongue twister craft!
