Sink or Float????

Sink or Float?.... that is the question!!!!!  This week in science we learned about MATTER.  We have learned that a liquid is matter that flows and it takes the shape of the container that it is in.  We have also discussed that solids keep their shape and you can mix, sort, measure, and weigh all solids. We conducted a sink or float experiment to see which solids would float on top of the water and which solids would sink.  We made predictions before the experiment.  Check out our results!

We Are Changing MATTER!

Can a liquid turn into a solid? We conducted an experiment to find out. We poured our liquid (orange juice) into Dixie cups and put them into the freezer overnight. Did our "MATTER" remain a liquid, turn into a solid, or evaporate into a gas??? You guessed it! It turned into a solid and now we get to enjoy yummy SOLID orange juice popsicles. MATTER is everywhere and everything is MATTER!

HOMEWORK?????

I asked my kiddos today if they would like more homework.  Some of their responses made me smile=)  This conversation led us into an opinion writing prompt where students stated their topic sentence about homework and supported their opinion with two supporting reasons.  We continued this topic in math and made a bar graph, picture graph, and tally table to represent our opinions about more homework.  It was pretty obvious that they are not big fans of having more homework.  I would have to agree.  These kiddos are young and work so hard when they are in my classroom.  They have many more years of homework in their future.... but I didn't tell them that.  LOL

Here is Jennica with out bar graph.
6 students want more homework and 13 do not!

Cylar is excited about our tally table

Aliyah is holding our class picture graph

"ANT"onyms and "SYNONYM" Rolls

This week in grammar, we learned about antonyms and synonyms.  It was a fun week talking about opposites and also words that mean the same or almost the same thing.  We played matching games and did some sorting.  Check out a couple of projects we completed and hung in the hallway.

Here are Aliyah's yummy "SYNONYM" rolls

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

GREEN, GREEN, and more GREEN!!  There was no pinching in first grade today=) We enjoyed a yummy Lucky Charm graphing activity in math today.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!!!

Today was the big day and boy we were busy!  My kiddos dressed in red and blue today and we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss.  Our Dr. Seuss activities for the day went perfectly with our math curriculum.  We did lots of graphing and measuring.  We sorted and graphed rainbow goldfish crackers (and yes we ate them when we were finished... YUM).  Students also traced their hands to make their very own fish.  They made estimations about how many cubes, marbles, and fish it would take to measure how long their hands were.  Finally, each student used goldfish to measure a variety of school supplies like scissors, notebooks, and glue sticks.  Have I mentioned before how much I love my job!  Hands on learning is the BEST!!!!!

Check out Ellie's Dr. Seuss Bow=)

Teagin did a great job sorting and graphing his goldfish crackers.

We read Cat in the Hat and wrote examples of cause and effect on our hats!
