A Little Sneak Peek Into First Grade

This week in spelling and phonics we are focusing on the vowel pairs OY and OI. My students made rOYal crowns this morning, we read Roy's Rich Soil, and planted our OY and OI flowers in the sOIl.

My classroom was full of little piggies this morning. We made pig snouts full of OI and OY words and "OINKED" around the room!!!!

We also worked on using the prefixes RE and UN. Students worked in pairs and matched Easter eggs together to combine base words with a prefix. Check it out!!!!!!

Yummy Math!

This week in math I introduced 3D shapes. We grouped shapes into categories based on flat surfaces and curved surfaces. We also counted how many flat surfaces a cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, pyramid, and cone had. My students learned that a sphere only has curved surfaces. One of our favorite lessons was when we actually ate food that represented these 3D shapes. We had a delicious time learning!!!!!

Makenna, Carter, and Addison can't wait to eat their 3D snacks!

Bugle Chip = Cone

Tootsie Roll = Cylinder

Wafer Cookie = Rectangular Prism

Carmel = Cube

Whopper = Sphere
