Check out these awesome WINTER acrostic poems my kiddos wrote! They also did a fantastic job on the art project to go along with their poems.

Compare and Contrast

Last week first grade was busy comparing and contrasting animals from our reading story titled Animal Groups. Students worked in pairs as they wrote about how their animals were alike and different. They filled out a ven diagram and also illustrated their animal of choice. It was a great team building activity where students worked together to complete a group project! I am so proud of all their hard work.

Who Is Your “Valenswine” This Year?

We read a cute valentine book titled Will You Be My Valenswine?, made little pigs out of hearts, and wrote about our favorite “VALENSWINES”. These little piggies are so adorable.

CLOUDS

In science we have been discussing the water cycle, weather, and different types of clouds. My students enjoyed this hand on activity where they used cotton balls to design their very own cumulus cloud formation. We read books titled Little Cloud by Eric Carle and It Looked Like Spilt Milk to spark our creativy.

Happy 100th Day!!!

We made it! We are officially 100 days smarter!!!! What a fun day in first grade. We started the day off with a read aloud as we made our 100 day crowns. Each student also made a necklace with 100 beads and estimated which jar contained more than 100 items, less than 100 items, and exactly 100 items. Students got creative and used their imaginations to illustrate a picture containing the number 100. This is always one of my favorite activities. I used an aging booth app on my phone and gave my kiddos a sneak peek at what they might look like when they are 100 years old. They got a kick out of all those wrinkles and gray hair. We had fun playing a math game called Race to 100 and ended the day with our 100th day snack. Each student collected 10 of 10 food items, sorted them on their 100 mat, and then mixed their trail mix together. It was a delicious treat to end the day! Oh, how could I forget...... we all had a fun time climbing in and out of the 100th day sign covering our doorway.

Where Does Weather Come From?

In science we have been learning about the water cycle and weather. Today we made water cycle bracelets with colored beads to represent the different parts of the water cycle. Students also created and labeled a water cycle craft and learned a song to help them remember terms like Evaporation, Condensation, and Precipitation.

Cause and Effect

First grade is right back at it after a long winter break! We are staring the new year off learning about cause and effect. It has been fun to read a variety of stories to the class that have great examples of cause and effect. Last week we read The Mitten. Students completed a cause and effect match up and made a winter mitten craft to go along with the story.

This week the class read A Bad Case Of The Stripes and discussed examples of cause and effect from the story. Students wrote 3 examples on a flip up graphic organizer and also colored a picture of the main character with her rainbow stripes.

Super Star Readers

Congrats!!!!A big congratulations to all of my 2nd quarter super star readers!!!! I am so proud of all my students that meat their AR goal this past quarter. Keep up the great work boys and girls!

Class Pets

I would like to introduce you to our new class pets, Max and Freckles. These cuddly little friends are excited to spend time learning with us in the classroom but more importantly, they are both looking forward to home visits and sleepovers with all of the students in the class. Max and Freckles also have a traveling journal that comes home with them. Please be sure to help your child illustrate and write about their adventures in the journal. Gunnar was the first lucky student to get the chance to spend some time hanging out with our new friends. We can’t wait to hear about their adventures together.

HAPPY GRINCH DAY!!!

There is green glitter EVERYWHERE but that’s what happens when the GRINCH comes to visit! The first grade hallway and classrooms were filled with green today and we celebrated this famous Christmas character!!!! Students drew their very own GRINCH portrait and wrote him a letter with ideas on how to be GOOD! Students also enjoyed green pudding, green juice, and green mint Oreos for a little tasty treat as we watched the Story if the Grinch. Finally, the class came up with lots of adjectives to describe the GRINCH!
